The Tuscaloosa News is looking for a sports writer to fill a full-time position that will be opening on its staff.

The job will primarily include coverage of high school sports, with an emphasis on the online, social media and multimedia aspects of the job. We cover 40 high schools, focusing heavily on a dozen schools within our county.

We are looking for a journalist who understands the urgency of the online news cycle, enterprise reporting and the art of storytelling on all platforms.

The ideal candidate would have demonstrable on-deadline coverage experience at a daily newspaper, as well as a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.

Our plan is to field applications to create a pool of candidates, then narrow that list to finalists who will be interviewed in the coming weeks.

The Tuscaloosa News is a consistent Associated Press Sports Editors top 10 award-winner (both print and web) with a circulation just under 30,000. It is a member of Halifax Media Group.

    Drug-free workplace – EOE.

All inquiries or questions should be submitted by email rather than phone.

Please send resume, clips and links to multimedia work to:

To answer the first question before it gets asked, Andrew Carroll is retiring. That's two retirements of longtime employees (Harold Stout on the copy desk being the other) this summer, so we're losing two battle-tested veterans.

This is a fantastic job for somebody. With Tommy as your boss, you'd be learning from the best.

Not a candidate but would be curious if there is any opportunity to help on backup coverage of the university. But since those seasons all run concurrently, I would guess not.

Pleased to announce that Joey Chandler of the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum in Ohio will be joining our staff to fill this position.

    Thanks to all who applied.

Tommy in Tuscaloosa moves a lot faster than Ronnie in Indianapolis.

SEC vs. Big Ten. The offenses are quicker.
