The Arizona Daily Star in Tucson has an opening for a full-time energetic and passionate high school sports editor.

The Star covers 61 high schools across four counties, including 26 big schools in the metro area. The high schools editor is responsible for a staff of five part-time reporters and works closely with the sports editor to determine daily coverage as well as special section content.

Tucson is a growing market in the Pac-10 Conference and home to the University of Arizona, as well as three spring training teams, a Triple-A baseball team, 56 area golf courses, a community college and outdoor opportunities including mountain biking, cycling, running, swimming, hiking and mountain climbing.

Applicants must have at least one year of daily newspaper experience. The Star, owned by Lee Enterprises, is a 101,000-circulation daily.

The successful candidate will possess strong reporting and editing skills. The position includes nights and weekend work.

Tucson is about an hour north of the Mexican border and 90 minutes south of Phoenix. The mid-sized paper is consistently among the top award winners in the region for its size.

A minimum of one year of experience for a position nominally supervising five people? Part-timers or not, that surprised me a bit.

I agree. Just one year of experience for this job seems low. Maybe because the pay will be low as well?

Good paper w/ some really good people.
Just be ready to drive quite a bit. Tucson isn't the biggest of cities, but it is extremely spread out.

Sounds like a pretty good job.
Any idea on the pay? Also, what is the word on the chain?

So when do we start. Will the editor be spending a lot of time on the desk, or actually out covering 10 some schools?

I can't speak for Tucson in particular, but Lee tends to underpay a bit, but it has wonderful bennies. They pay 5 percent into your 401K before you contribute a dime, plus they have paid time off instead of vacation and sick leave, which is great for young healthy people. You get three weeks of it.
