If the Yankees decide not to bring Torre back, who would make the best replacement?

Lee Mazzilli is waiting patiently by his phone.

    Still waiting.

C'mon, guys, this is getting embarassing.

    What, no Jim Tracy? ...

It's going to be a combination of Girardi and Mattingly.

I don't think Girardi's time in Florida was a disaster. Sure, he didn't get along well with the upper-management, but he got results from a young, inexpensive team. He's from the Yankees' dominant era in the late '90s, and will be welcomed back with open arms.

La Russa is too thin-skinned to manage in New York.

The lack of compelling candidates is exactly why Torre will return.

An interesting theory, but it's not like there's a compelling candidate coming down the pike. (JOE MCCARTHY IS NOT COMING THRU THAT DOOR!! CASEY STENGEL IS NOT COMING THRU THAT DOOR!!!) Willie Randolph has proven why it took him 982 interviews to land a job: He couldn't manage a Pony League team, never mind an MLB team.

Torre can't manage forever, which is about as long as it'll take for a decent-looking candidate to emerge.

Lee Mazzilli? The same Lee Mazzilli that was hated by his Orioles teams?

If Big Stein passes over Mattingly for Girardi, I wonder what the temperature in the clubhouse would be. Frosty? Warm?

Girardi's too young to handle that roster -- as currently constituted.
