Plain Dealer editor acknowledges vitriolic reader comments, throws up her hands

    Apparently asking people to be nice didn't work.

    PD instead hired someone to clean up the comments: http://blog.cleveland.com/updates/2009/10/plain_dealer_wants_comments_--.html

    Part of the new strategy is for the writers to engage in the online discussions.

    Is that engagement happening before or after shooting, editing and posting video, updating Twitter, etc?

    Truth. It's not fair, and borderline inhumane to make writers do that.

    It's not a fair fight, because only the writer goes in with his identity known and his reputation at stake. Only the writer runs the risk of knuckle-draggers digging up photos of his wife and calling her an ugly bitch (and I've seen this happen). There is no way, absolutely none, for the identifiable person to win at anything on the Internet against the anonymous.
