    NEWSPAPER SPORTS DIVERSITY

MINNEAPOLIS — Sports departments at U.S. newspapers get a failing grade for gender diversity and a C+ for racial diversity, according to a report. Seventy-eight percent of staffs at Associated Press Sports Editors member newspapers are white men.

But I thought women were getting all the good jobs.

I would like to see the breakdown of applications they get.

I suspect the number of "white male" applications far exceeds 78 percent.

Without knowing that number, you are criticizing departments for not going out and finding people who never even applied to their place.

And at the risk of sounding like a prick, is "diversity" really a bona fide topic of conversation with axes lopping off 100+ jobs in a single stroke every day?

Yeah. Have job cuts been on the agenda out there?

Diversity is definitely important, but it seems like a much lesser priority in a summer in which many sports departments across the nation are losing 10 to 30 percent of their staffs.

Maybe lack of diversity plays a role in why newspapers aren't connecting with readers.

Not officially, but everyone's talking about them. Lot of people sailing on that same boat right now. It's a little depressing.
