This is something that passed underneath my radar but by all accounts this woman was a huge folk music presence throughout her career.

The time I remember seeing her, and I'm curious if anyone else remembers, was on the first Letterman show to air following the 9-11 attacks.
The talk shows all stopped airing for several nights, and when Letterman finally came back on he had this woman as music talent.

She came out on stage with the Harlem Boys Choir and the song was "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine!"

It was awesome. Chill bumps ran through me as they knocked it out of the park.
A very inspirational and patriotic piece they did.

Anyone know much about this woman and her career?

The only thing I remember of her is that night on Letterman. She could really sing.
