Pretty sure the rule book actually says it must be a bunt to be scored a sacrifice.

    Rule 2 – Section 31 – SACRIFICE
2-31 A sacrifice is a bunt which enables any runner to advance, or a fly ball (sacrifice fly) which enables a runner to score. In either case, the result is the batter-runner being put out before he reaches first base, or would have resulted in his being put out if the batted ball had been fielded without error, and provided two were not out when the ball was hit. A sacrifice is not listed as a time-at-bat (9-3-4).

That would have been my guess too, but it happened about 30 years prior in a BAA game. Will give a hint: he man who did it played two different pro sports during his short career.

The hint leads me to Rifleman Chuck Connors

You would be correct. Apparently the back board was installed incorrectly.

And I spent five minutes trying to post the intro to the rifleman with him shooting, but it wouldn’t take

After I guessed, I looked up Connors. He's one of 13 men to play in MLB and the NBA. Can you name them? I'd say seven of the other 12 are recognizable.

And did Dick Groat play in the NBA? He'd be another.
