Bogus toothpaste now found in 6 states including Mich. and Canada

WASHINGTON -- Counterfeit Colgate toothpaste has now turned up in Canada, where testing has found dangerous bacteria but not the poisonous chemical previously detected in four states, a health official said Saturday.

In addition, store owners and police say they have discovered that the bogus Colgate was sold in Michigan and Virginia.

The FDA warned earlier in June that fake Colgate distributed in Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania may contain a poisonous chemical called diethylene glycol, or DEG, that typically is used in antifreeze. That toothpaste was the subject of a June 13 recall by a New Jersey distributor.

It was not immediately clear if the counterfeit products in Pinconning, Mich. and Arlington, Va. had been tested for DEG.

Tom Hornacek, who co-owns Pinny Food Center in Pinconning, told The Bay City Times that he issued a recall after learning about the problem on television. The toothpaste was purchased from a dollar store supplier.

"This is the only item we bought from a dollar store supplier," Hornacek said. "We had quite a few cases."

In Canada, testing did not find the chemical but did show high levels of harmful bacteria, said Paul Duchesne, a spokesman for Health Canada.

The rest of the world has been dealing with this one for months... Chinese-made toothpaste with DEG heading into Latin and Central America, other parts of Asia and the Carribean. And there have been stories for months about these toothpastes having already been illegally imported into the US and being sold in dollar stores. FYI, last year, Chinese-made cough syrup with DEG in it killed more than 50 people in Panama.

This is just one instance of a larger problem.

The regulatory agencies that we consider normal such as the FDA don't exist in China.

I had a thread on this a week or so ago.

There have been recalls of about 300,000 defective automobile tires, toys containing lead paint, possible counterfeit auto brakes, and of course, pirated DVD's and all sorts of counterfeit electronics. It's out of control and unless there's an effort to do something about it we could have a major crisis (say, food) on our hands in North America.

The Chinese don't give a fuck, and our government only does when people start dying. That cheap shit causes way too many problems, but it's ohhhhhh so fucking cheap and convenient.

Didn't they just recently sentence the leader of their version of the FDA to death for corruption?

So shut down all government regulatory agencies. .

    "Too much government!"

    "Let the market decide!"
