NFL Week 2 thread -- Tim Couch still sucks

Haskins didn't exactly suck at Ohio State. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist who threw for 4,800 yards and 50 touchdowns his last year there. I don't know how good an NFL quarterback he'll turn out to be, but he was outstanding in college.

Similarly, Burrow was better than mediocre his junior year at LSU. He threw for almost 3,000 yards, had a 16-5 TD to INT ratio, and ran for seven TDs. The team won nine games -- it should have been 10 if they hadn't gotten royally fucked at Texas A&M -- and played in a New Year's Six bowl. He just made such a quantum leap from 2018 to 2019 that it made it look like he was more average than he was in 2018.
It also helped that, sometime around February 2019, for the first time in 20 years LSU discovered that the forward pass is legal.

I think what Burrow really has is a mix of very capable talent and every positive intangible in the book. It's clichéd, but you see it right away when you watch him for a few games. He's tough. He doesn't panic. He has good pocket presence and knows when to run and when to scramble to buy time. He keeps his eyes downfield and can spot a play developing. He doesn't make a ton of mistakes, which is a huge part of playing QB. Give him a line that can protect him to some degree, to where they can run some deeper routes, and he'll be fine.
This was one of his signature plays in 2019, and it's the one I always think of to sum up what he brings to the table. It's a long catch and run by the receiver, off of a pass that wasn't anything special in and of itself. But the way Burrow senses pressure, moves up in the pocket, keeps the play alive, and stands in to finish the play while taking a hit are all very special. A lot of QBs would have taken a sack there. He kept his cool and created one of the biggest plays of LSU's season.

I think Haskins will be a fine quarterback in due time. The Football Team has some nice options around him that weren't there last year. I don't think he'll ever be an all-pro, but he'll be more than serviceable. He already seems to have gotten away from making debilitating mistakes, at least he did in Week 1. That defense is really good and will give him cover to grow and learn this year.
