    Please be aware that these positions are not only part-time, but they're temporary as well.....

    The Associated Press seeks 16 temporary Newspersons for its Regional Sports Desk in Spokane, Washington.

    These are part-time positions ranging from 8 to 16 hours during the fall football season, and up to 20 hours during the winter basketball season, though there is a possibility that some positions could shift to full-time hours during the basketball season. The newspersons will be required to write, edit and re-write stories on college football and basketball and related topics, including high school athletics. To perform the tasks, they will be required to communicate with various sources, including but not limited to AP staff members, stringers and university Sports Information Directors. The positions are temporary, beginning Aug. 19 until March 16. Qualifications: Candidates should have an interest in sports, and college or professional journalism experience. Applicants must be able to compile sports game stories from various sources, including box scores. Good communication skills, and attention to detail and accuracy and an ability to juggle multiple tasks are required. Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

    Still, this is a great way for aspiring young journalists to break in to the business, get some experience and make some contacts. Better than Walmart.

    Even though they're just part-time, really glad to see this.

    Previously, you had stringers or the Spokane AP news guy picking up things like Gonzaga b-ball and WSU football.

    Or if it was important enough (think NCAA tourney games) one of the Seattle AP sportswriters or shooters would visit the east side of the state.

    Just applied for this yesterday. The local AP guy came to our journalism capstone class the other day and pitched it to a bunch of us. I just graduated from EWU with a BA in journalism and was a sports reporter for the school newspaper. Have been working for The Spokesman-Review for the past year, started on the phones and moved up to the copy desk.

    Hope I get it! Odds are decent considering they're hiring 16 people.
