    Two questions.
    What is "strategic communication?"
What kind of job/pay will he get in a year with a masters in "strategic communication" as opposed to roughly 35K now in a newspaper job?

  4. Yeah, I'd take the job.

Wannabe: Can't he finish grad school online?

Strat comm is the pretty word for PR/advertising.etc. It's like when Disney parks stated calling "Guest service managers" "Guest service FACILITATORS."

And strat comm has a better future than newspapers right now.

Stick with grad school. If he has the urge to write, freelance on weekends.

Yeah. Just think of it as paying for the last year of the degree vs. GETTING paid to get relevent experience while still keeping open the option of returning to grad school or continuing grad school while working.

Can always go back and finish grad school. Might be even harder to find a job a year from now.

    Get paid.

Those who have returned to school after an absence of some time can tell of the difficult transition it is. The world is littered with people who left grad school early thinking, "hey, I'll finish!" And they never do.

Take the 34 grand NOW in a volatile profession, or be patient and get paid just as well or better with more security.

    Again, a no-brainer.

How do you know he'll get paid just as well in a secure job in a year?

I'd take the money and worry about finishing grad school if it's even necessary at a later date.
