    Some card readers only work on PC's, so make sure you try it after you buy it. If it doesn't work, take it back.

    But yes, you could then use the memory card like a thumb drive.

    Are they faster than downloading them from the camera to the computer?

    Noticeably faster. If you're downloading hundreds of photos, it's worth having the reader.
