John Wick is gratuitous. It doesn’t even fit the mold of the expectations.

 

Fast and the Furious

 

There were no expectations of this movie. It was the classic action B movie

 

I'll give you one big one, and it has a lot of ties to John Wick...

The Matrix. The original one, not the sequels.

Though it had a large budget due to the innovative special effects, there was very little buzz around it prior to release. No one wanted to be in it - remember, Keanu Reeves was trending way down as an actor at that point, Laurence Fishburne was an "actor's actor" who had won awards but who audiences didn't really know, and Carrie Ann Moss was largely unknown.

It had a viral marketing component well before social media took over what it meant to go viral, but that also kept the anticipation limited to a certain audience. Plus, it was released around the same time as Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, which dominated the conversation.

And then The Matrix blew up on opening weekend, made a shit ton of money, was praised by critics, and spawned an entire franchise.

 

Ok, The Sixth Sense.

Reservoir Dogs I always thought to be a cult type movie, before Pulp Fiction.

Sixth Sense definitely outkicked it’s coverage.
How about Alien?

 

Everyone in this group has forgotten they made five movies better.
