    The ratings will suffer.

Darn. Their final last year might have been the single greatest tennis match ever played.

That said, there's no way they could have lived up to that, so any kind of encore would have been disappointing.

True dat. But this is still sad. I love the way Nadal competes. I hope the knee problems are not chronic or career-threatening.

This will add fuel to the fire surrounding Andy Murray, whom the English believe is their best hope for quite some time.

The event lost a big one here. Never a good thing when the defending champ won't compete, no matter what the reason.

Given the way he plays, injuries were going to start catching up to him at some point. Very bad news, but nobody wants to see him try to play and get bounced in the first round by a qualifier either (least I don't).

Murray's not really a grass courter, although he did beat Blake in a grass court final last week.

And we should hear enough Pete Sampras-Fed stories to make us all ill over the next two weeks.

BTW: That match last year is the subject of book, Strokes of Genius. L. Jon Wertheim, the author, has written a lot of tennis stuff for SI and a coupla of other books.

It sucks that men's tennis has gotten to the point where there are only two players worth watching, but that's the way it is.

With one of them out, there will be almost no reason to watch.

Have you even watched Andy Murray this year?

Or Novak Djokovic or the reborn Andy Roddick? Maybe even check out Marat's retirement tour?

Nothing worse than people who know shit about a sport showing up and saying there's nobody worth watching, when it's clear they haven't bothered to watch more than a match or two all year.

I'll be pulling for the lad from Dunblane.
