Most off-the-wall, random quote I've ever heard...

The following is from a feature I'm doing on a track kid before the state meet. He's a 400 guy and his dad was actually a pretty accomplished quarter-miler back in his day. This is the elder's account of when his son was cut from the basketball team his freshman year.

"He didn't make it [the basketball team] so he came home and he was in tears. He was crying. He was a pretty good basketball player. I just said, 'Don't worry about it. You can do something else. You like golf.' So he went out for the track team because his mom played basketball."

I'm not using it because it doesn't make a damn bit of sense, but I thought I had to post it here.

No, I was just kind of mesmerized and moved on.

Holy hell, that's great. Sounds like something out of a sports comedy.

Sounds like you were interviewing Paula Abdul.

You should have asked him what the meaning of life is.

    Maybe George Carlin could help:
"You know an odd feeling? Sitting on the toilet eating a chocolate candy bar."

    mesmerized?

the guy either slipped up or got confused, but sure seems like there was the making of a pretty good anecdote there

i guess posting this on a message board and mocking the guy was more important than crafting the best possible story

You should go back to the dad and try to clarify. Sounds like this might be more a case of the dad misspeaking than being off the wall.
