Just be "good enough." Wow. That's great morale-building encouragement right there!

"Don't worry about making that story for A-1 or B-1 better. "Good enough" will suffice. Get finished so you can do a second or third story today."

I think he's probably talking about the B-6 story, and he's right in some instances.

Beat me to it. Turning out crappy products during hard financial times comes very easily to many industries.

As sad or even repulsive as we may find that idea, maybe it's reality. And maybe if it is reality, we should adjust the product accordingly so they'll be interested enough to buy it, instead of trying to force them to change their interests.

Are the New York Post or New York Daily News having the same issues with declining circulation, staff cuts, etc.? If not, maybe that says something.

Oh, for fuck's sake. You guys don't know this bullshit by now?
David Butler isn't an editor. He is Dean Singleton's head of "Firing and Redeployment."
His note to the staff is long because over the last two decades he's had memo after memo to append from. You know how many of you can pound out that 15" gamer on deadline with one quote? David Butler has that type recall arranging euphemistic MediaNews blether.

Post loses $40 million a year. Murdoch is fine with it. But they are certainly no beacon of a profitable business model.

i strongly disagree on the car front. GM, Ford cars are way better today than even 4 years ago. Toyota got under the radar for years by avoiding public "recalls" with undercover "service campaigns" instead.

Al Capone used to have a method of taking out an enemy. He'd send two assassins. One would greet the victim with a warm smile and a handshake, only the handshake was a death grip. The greeter would not let go of the hand while the other assassin proceeded to blow the victim's head off. This is what Dave Butler does, only he manages to pull off both roles to perfection. He holds your hand and says "We'll get through this," then with the other blows your head off. He feels your pain and lines his pockets. He became a made man learning this in the Jelenic/JRC family and hasn't missed a beat since. You see him coming, run. Or in the least, avoid the handshake.

Simon, I truly don't think so.
For all his quirks, Murdoch believes in the medium. He's proved that with Dow Jones.
He's so diversified/profitbale, it's not bothering him for some reason.
