Come on, spnited. Why should we care what Maureen Dowd, Leonard Pitts, Eugene Robinson or Thomas Friedman think?

Maher, Williams, Stewart, Colbert, Beck and Hannity all have a large profile, platform and audience. Their views and opinions help shape public opinion.

It's not that people can't think for themselves. But, someone in the media's opinion is going to be heard by more people and will be repeated by more people.

But, the other thing is that liberals have set up a system of political correctness that brands thoughts they disagree with as racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.

But, then they want to excuse their fellow travelers when they cross the lines that have been drawn. So, you (not you specifically) can't go crazy every time a right winger pops off and then ring your hands and wonder why anyone pays attention to these pundits when it's someone on the left.

The left created these rules. Let them live by them.

So no speech can be called 'racist' or 'sexist' or 'homophobic'? Even speech that is demonstrably 'racist' and 'sexist' and 'homophobic'?

The phrase "political correctness" is used almost exclusively by white male conservatives who resent having their punchlines taken from them.

Of course there is all kinds of speech that is demonstrably racist, sexist, homophobic, etc., and it should be pointed out and called what it is.

But, too often, the left accuses those who disagree with them on policy with these accusations.

You can disagree with abortion and not be sexist. You can disagree with affirmative action without being racist. But, the left, in many cases, would rather brand their opponents instead of debate them on the issues.

I've said on many occasions -- here and elsewhere -- that racism (and, by extension, its related -isms) is evil, pure evil. It should be confronted. It shouldn't be tolerated. A light should be shown on it and its practitioners should not be tolerated or accepted.

But false charges of the same are also evil. And, those making the false accusations often know the charges are false, but make it to score political points or to avoid having to defend their position. It's cowardly and sinful.

The left often tries to treat those on the right as racist without even trying to prosecute or prove the charge. Take a look at what happened when Rush Limbaugh attempted to buy a piece of the St. Louis Rams.

It was portrayed as a fact that he is a racist. It was like there was no reason to back up that belief with any facts because, as a right winger, he just had to be one.

And then when racist quotes were put forward, they were all made up -- every one of them. And people who had never listened to him were convinced he had spoken those words because they fit their preconceived notion of who Rush Limbaugh is.

No, calling Limbaugh a racist is not as evil as calling a black person a nigger

Rush never said "Take the bone out of your nose"?

And never talked about the NFL advocating for black quarterbacks?

No it's used almost exclusively by the left as a means of determining what is and is not acceptable speech in relation to your political affiliation. It is and always has been about stifling speech of those with whom you disagree and excusing speech of those with whom you agree. This thread is the perfect example. Maher shows that liberals are as bigoted as anyone else, but his is not hate speech because, well, because he's a good liberal.

Az - You seem to like to fashion yourself as the "anti establishment type" and harbor great resentment against "the man" . You must have had a conservative father that beat you or something.

No he isn't. He whacks at both sides of the spectrum and wants an end to the war on drugs
