John Connolly, who worked in the Boston branch of the FBI, was tight with Boston mobster Whitey Bulger. It is believed that Bulger was one of Connolly's anonymous sources.

Wasn't "The Departed" based on this case? I'm pretty sure Whitey Bulger was the inspiration for Frank Costello (Nicholson's character).

    In part, yes.

I've done a bit of reading on the topic and it's disheartening how easily Bulger was able to flip Connolly.

Even more disheartening is Connelly didn't get caught until he was 68 years old.

And Whitey is still on the run.

Zip tipped Whitey off that the FBI were about to arrest him.

  7. And this is about 40 years less than that criminal bastard deserved.
"Black Mass" by Dick Lehr and Gerry O'Neill is the essential text here, and Jim Sheridan's coming to Boston to make the movie with, it is said, Daniel Day-Lewis as Whitey. Not a real stretch from Bill The Butcher, I'm thinking.

  8. If DDL is in it, I'm seeing it. Best actor working today, IMO.

    great book.

Truth is stranger than fiction certainly applies to the Bulgers.

Wasn't this also a Law and Order with Michael O'Keefe?

Read Black Mass a couple years ago, Fens. It's absolutely a great read, although it is disturbing that a high school dropout was able to turn the FBI into a branch office of the Boston Mob.

Except, he will glamorize that asshole.... by accident.... that's how much better looking DDL is than Whitey fucking Bulger.

    Should have been Brendan Gleeson.
