No, I'm sure he's not trying to be greedy, but you know the old saying money talks and bull**** walks.

My guess is base high 20s with overtime pushing you to low to mid 30s.

So low to mid 30s is my guess.

He's not here because he's greedy. He's just here to help the needy.

Refresh my fading memory -- what chain owns Lake Charles?

I believe the Shearman Corporation still owns the Lake Charles paper. They also still have papers out in Hobbs, N.M., and Trinidad, CO.

Shearman Corporation is fancy talk for family owned. The family lives and has a certain influence in Lake Charles.

These days, being family owned could be called a plus. OK, just curious.

Little birdie tells me they have close to 100 applicants. College beats at mid-sized, family-owned papers sound good these days...

OK, this is Scooter Hobbs, the sports editor in question. I don't know why my log name is Willie. I had to jump through several hoops to figure out how to log on to this site and finally learned my log in name was Willie. The only other time I've posted here was after my wonderful friend Kent Heitholt was murdered in the parking lot of his paper in Columbia, Mo. several years ago. I guess I set it up then. And I don't know who BrianGriffin is, but he's got some insight in saying that close to 100 people have applied for this job. That's only a slight over-statement. To be honest, I've been overwhelmed by the response. I've tried to answer each inquiry personally, but if I missed somebody I do apologize. I'm trying to give each resume' its due, but obviously, it's going to take some time. But there is humor in this chaos. I know you true journalists will enjoy this one. I got a resume from a guy with no journalism experience or education. In fact, his current job is at a furniture store here in Lake Charles. But under "Qualifcations" he listed: "There's not a bigger McNeese fan on earth than me." He got a Dear John response.

That part of the song always bothered me, because the Mississippi River doesn't run within 100 miles of Lake Charles. And you have to drive through 50 miles of swamp to get to the Gulf of Mexico from Lake Charles.

Levon Helm should have put down the bong for a while and looked at a map.

As for this job, don't know much about the paper, though I know Scooter a little bit and he seems like a good guy. Met Gary a couple of times, too.

The town itself is fairly typical of those along I-10, not a whole lot going on most of the time, though the casinos bring a pretty steady influx of tourists. You're close enough to Houston (about 2 hours) to drive off there when you get a couple of days off and New Orleans is about 2 1/2 hours away.
