Masked gunman kills Oakland reporter

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Police are at the scene of a fatal shooting in Oakland that was reported at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday, NBC11 reported.
Sources told NBC11 the victim was Oakland Post reporter Chauncey Bailey.
The victim was shot once in the back and once in the head, Oakland Fire Department Capt. Melinda Drayton said.

A man wearing all black approached the victim on a busy street, shot him then ran away, police said.
Officers are talking to possible witnesses to gather more information, Officer Roland Holmgren said.
Witnesses said they heard four shots.
Bailey is a former Oakland Tribune reporter.
Holmgren said he believes the suspect was looking for the victim and that the shooting was not a random act.

Anyone here work with him? Was he on a controversial beat or had he written any controversial stories recently? Sadly, this is the first "motive" that popped into my head, though I hate to speculate. This is shocking, to say the least ...

I worked with Chauncey and he was a good guy, though I didn't know him well. He knew the area and was very involved in the community. It's a big loss for the people of Oakland. What a waste.

AP is referring to him as the "outspoken" new editor of the Post, but it doesn't say what he was so outspoken about that would prompt someone to have him killed.

Given the police chief and deputy police chief were both on scene, I'm guessing it won't take too long for them to find the shooter.

Hopefully they find his killer, because this is a pretty messed up situation and one I have wondered about before. Because all of us have written articles that have made people very angry and I have always been afraid of seeing those people in public and have them beat the shit out of me or something.

Oakland newspaper editor gunned down in parking lot

In what police are calling a targeted killing, longtime Bay Area journalist Chauncey Bailey was shot and killed Thursday morning in downtown Oakland as he walked to work at the Oakland Post, where he had recently been named editor.

About 7:25 a.m., Bailey, 57, a former Oakland Tribune reporter, was likely walking to work from an apartment where he had been living near Lake Merritt, when a masked gunman dressed in black approached him on foot and fired at least three rounds, hitting Bailey at least once in the upper body, police said.

The gunman then fled to a waiting van and drove off, police said.

Bailey, wearing a business suit and dress shoes, fell to the ground on the sidewalk at the edge of a public parking lot near the U.S. Post Office at 14th and Alice streets, directly across from the Starlite Child Development Center. Police and paramedics failed to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Evidence recovered during the police raid at Your Black Muslim Bakery this morning links members of the organization to the ambush killing of Oakland Post Editor Chauncey Bailey, authorities said.

Officials would not say what the evidence is, but sources told the Oakland Tribune that it was a shotgun seized at the bakery that was used to kill Bailey, 57, Thursday morning in downtown Oakland.

Bailey, a former Oakland Tribune reporter, was walking to the Oakland Post, where he was recently named editor when he was gunned down at 14th and Alice streets. He had been working on a story about the organization.
