I wonder if he pitched for Texas?

Watching Stieb lose that perfect game almost brought a teenaged Sea Bass to tears.

IIRC, Stieb had no-hitters broken up in the ninth on four occasions. This one, the two Double J mentioned, plus one at Chicago in the mid-80's. Rudy Law led off the 9th with a home run, and the next batter hit one out too (it might have been Vance Law).

EDIT - the one against the White Sox was Aug 24, 1985 and it was Rudy Law and Bryan Little who led off the ninth with bombs.

  3. Buehrle's the type of pitcher who stands a good chance of piling up value in his supposed decline years like Jamie Moyer. I wouldn't bet on it -- especially if he doesn't want to stay in the game as long as he can -- but it's not out of the question. Hell, he already throws the fifth-slowest fastball in the league (and the fifth-lowest percentage of fastballs), so it's entirely possible that he's set for a extended third act.

He doesn't get any credit for the World Series, but his performance in ALCS Game 2 changed the course of the postseason for that Sox team. He would've pitched in the 10th inning had the Pierzynski play not happened. He's fine, postseason-wise.

Plus, you gotta think Buehrle will get some support from the writers for helping them make deadline.

One was on a nasty bad-hop single to 2B IIRC
