Don't know why anybody would want to take this gig if they're never going to get to touch the prime beat. Seems like an awkward position to be in.

that seems like some decent coin for a 10k daily.

Tom, have to agree with that. Outgoing SE claims the prime beat for himself. So who would really be in charge? He gets the best of both worlds - best beat and doesn't have to lay out the section every day.

it doesn't even sound like an SE opening.

    The set up

"Retired" SE: K-State beat writer (Still), column writer (Still), person who dictates coverage of K-State (Still)

Sports Editor: Does pages. Hires the other full-time writer to cover preps. Coordinates part-time help. Handles the management side.

If somebody wants a career as a desk person and wants to put an SE title on their resume, they go ahead. You'll basically have free reign in terms of how your section looks. But the old codger is set in his ways. However, he might be more open to doing things in a semi new way since he's not the one who has to sell it to the bosses and not the one who has to be in the office by 8 a.m. M-F to do the section.

No way does this sound like fun. The new SE probbly won't get much support from the old one.
Plus, what if the old SE sucks? Is there anything the new SE could do about it?
It sounds more like an ASE spot to me.

If any midwestern college kid wants to know some more, send me a PM. I know a couple folks that could provide some insight.

new guy has to go in there and dictate terms. if not, no way anybody should touch this -- even to get SE on the resume.

Especially in Manhattan, Kan. Pretty darn cheap town. Plus, they serve PBR, so you can really stretch that $30k.

When offered a Manhattan High beat position upon graduation eight years ago, the salary on the table was $17,200. So yeah, that money looks pretty good given what they have offered others in the past.

And while Manhattan isn't my favorite town -- been jumped there too many times while with friends for no good reason; and no, it had nothing to do with the rivalry -- it's not the worst place to live.

That's what you get for having the gall to carry a wallet in front of a KSU quarterback.
