    At least the state has been spared the costs associated with incarceration, a trial and the execution.

    This is just horrible.......you never want to believe that evil like this exists so close to us, but it does. My condolences to the families and friends of the victims, and best wishes to the injured. :'(

    Watched the video.

    One thing my logic-meter ain't processing:

    Said that fire fighters were cut off by police and couldn't get to the scene immediately since shots were still being fired.

    Yet, this whacko ended up dead by suicide 15 miles away.

    The LA Times version doesn't say gunshots were actually being heard; it says "police kept firefighters at bay as flames engulfed the house, believing the gunman might still be in the area."

    I think guns were found inside the house. Is it possible the fire caused some of them to go off?

    Actually, it sounds as if he was planning on running away. Report out today indicates he had a plane ticket for Canada and a large wad of money on his body.

    Caught the news of this while flipping through the channels with my niece and nephew today - kept going once I caught the gist. A truly horrible act. I don't know how you even begin to convey the tragedy here. My thoughts are not only with the family members, but also the emergency responders that had to deal with this over the past two days. Truly awful.

    How would you like to be the unfortunate 8-year-old girl who was the one to open the door for Santa and then get shot in the face?

    Looks like she'll survive, but there will be a need for lifetime counseling, I bet.
