The line of thinking that a tragedy could lead to a real change in policy isn't new and mostly because, as based on historical precedent, it works.

Will it work in this situation is a good question but the reality is if Merkel tells Putin to calm the fuck down and kick up some real threats of economic sanctions, Putin is very likely to take it down a notch.

Loved the taped recordings back to the homeland. Accents fit every
stereotype of the shadowy Russians of The Cold War era.

    LOL. OK.

And, the examples Ignatius gave are good ones?

If only William Borah were alive today to talk to Putin, all of this may have been averted. But, Merkel may be the next best thing. I'm sure Putin will listen to her.

"We don’t see a U.S. military role beyond what we’ve already been doing in working with our NATO partners and...the Baltic states."

It must be reassuring to our allies in the Baltics to know that our President is unaware of their membership in NATO since 2004.

To your point the sinking of the Maine in 1898 and The Lusitania in
1915 were tragedies that brought both The Spanish American and
    WWI wars to quick endings.

The sinking of the Maine helped start the Spanish-American war even though it turned out that it wasn't sunk by mines.

Funny how much faith many seem to place in Merkel. It's like she has some mystical
powers. She got a lot of street cred from the dirty look that she gave Bush.

Just a mention of her name strikes the fear of God in people. Merkel might be
the only person mythologized more than Derek Jeter.

    DiFi on CNN:

If only Putin would talk it out, and admit to his mistakes, we could resolve everything.
