Losing young employees

    Every kid I meet thinks he's the next Bill Simmons or Deadspin guy.

    Well, yeah. The two dailies in my native county (both of which I had full-time gigs with at one point) had a bunch of local lifers back in the 90s, but by the time I came in (1999-2000) it was it. Nobody new and local on the sports side has written for any local daily since. Now the smaller of those dailies is history and the other has a bunch of transient short-timers who will be out the door within a year or two for bigger and (maybe not so) better things. Most of the high schools don't even have proper student papers anymore.

    Nobody wants to be Bill Simmons anymore, I guess.
