I don't know or care about Graham's sexuality, but anyone who has lived down south has met the straight guy who talks like Graham does.

 

He has called Graham's sexuality into question with the knowledge, authority and manner of an eighth-grader on the school bus.

Despite this deserving no dignified response, it has received quite a large amount of news coverage, contrary to your main point here.
