Let's settle this once and for all!

This has been a hot-button topic on the board. Zeke says some college dictionary had it as clitorides, and a couple of entries in dictionary.com support that. Clitorises is the first entry listed in my dictionary at work. Clitorii seems intuitive to some, but really isn't, in the sense that clitoris is not like focus or locus, which are pluralized by losing the "us" and adding "i" And due to a few squeaky wheels, "clits" comes in as a late entry. No, I'm not adding "little men in the canoe."

So which is it? Our stylebook awaits a ruling. I would opt for clitorises, since I don't want such a nice thing sounding like chloride.

Clitoride sounds like some sort of sex toy, likely invented in Japan.

 

I prefer the term "little man in the canoe."
