Maybe the beach lifeguard services are only a small portion of what the company actually supplies. Only thing I can think, especially at $334,000 a year.

So if someone's life is at stake, no matter how far, it's OK to leave your post and leave lots of others at risk? I know there's a strong desire to make this into some morality play regarding outsourcing, which is all well and good. But no matter who a lifeguard works for, at some point discretion is the better part of valor. I'm not defending the company, but I'm not so sure the policy in question is a bad one.

    From the article:

Company officials said other lifeguards watched over Lopez's area during the rescue and were on the phone with 911 operators.

"The beach remained protected at all times," Ellis said.

Yes, I saw that. Sorry to be so contrary, but I still think there's some wisdom to the company's policy.

If you do the math, this isn't out of whack at all.

    $8.25 an hour x 10 hours x 4 lifeguards x 365 days = $120,000

Figure a supervisor's salary, even if it's only like $50K, brings it to $170,000.

And they are also staffing city pools, which has to be at least as big a job as the beach and probably quite a bit bigger.

That's just my rough guess, but I don't see anything wrong with the total amount.

That insane. Forget that the article said his post was covered the whole time -- which if true, means he made a spot decision showing great judgment.

What you essentially just said is, "Let someone die. ... to potentially protect others, none of whom are at risk at the moment."

    That is insane.

I think most people can agree he did the right thing.

    He was fired over stupidity.
