Frank--What you wrote is completely accurate. Irrefutable.

However: Would you agree that there's an art to managing the situation on an ongoing basis, so your 'supporting cast' can work with some morale and professionalism and dignity?

Sure, that's why I said some do it with more finesse than others. But the fact is, no matter how it's done, people get pissy when they have to shift gears because someone else decided to shift theirs. But, yeah, tact and tone can help a bit.

. . . rather than walking around on eggshells all the time, constantly concerned about having to conform to the lastest whim of the Mouse That Roared?

    Dead-on.

How many papers can you name where even the average sports fan has heard that there is a problem with the lead columnist and fellow writers.

As far as M & the MD being critical of the paper, why can't it work both ways? The News through their media column provides critique of their work.

So what? Whether other media in other cities choose to report it, it still happens. Newpaper people bicker with and without the knowledge of Boom_70 -- and in towns you've probably never heard of. The tree falls in the forest whether you hear it or not.

The point that people have made on this thread is that when newspapers report on radio people, in most cases there is some actual reporting involved, and that's often not the case when radio people spout off about newspapers. Perhaps you can't tell the difference, but again, that doesn't mean the situation does not exist.

Here is item from Bob Raisman column last week- is this the type of reporting that you are refering to :

    FAN's Super mouth

Mike (Sports Pope) Francesa, on a work-release program from the FAN Cave to do Super Bowl duty, played the role of human wind machine all last week.

It only took one of the marquee guests, who parade from show to show on Supe radio row, to start responding to a Francesa inquiry before Sports Pope was already answering his own question.

Why bother even having a guest?

Favorite moment: Falcons owner Arthur Blank was telling how he met with Bill Parcells at Tuna's Saratoga home. Francesa interjected, saying: "We rented a house on the same block."

Some big-timers drop names. Francesa is creative. He drops real estate. Was this rental on Park Place? Baltic Ave., perhaps?

Chris (Mad Dog) Russo had a glazed look while this blowhard session was in progress. Either he was totally blown away, or wondering if his agent can finally get him comparable money to Francesa, who recently got a contract extension from the FANdroids.

NYDN woes are fair game for Fatso and Fruit Loops.

And in the course of the Olson/Loopy/Carter discussion, the two jackasses also ripped into Raismann for that column.

Raissman knows F&FL are FOS, and writes, accordingly.

My way of thinking - when I was a writer AND during a brief stint as a columnist - is the lead guy sets the tone. He has to write the story. Everything else, including columns, serves as color, support, etc.
During my 461 days (yes, one of the staff counted) as SE, the conflict didn't arise much. When it did, that was the answer. Guy writing lead gets first call. It's HIS/HER story.

But Moddy, wasn't this a column and a sidebar?

Who gets pull in that situation?
