This is not a critique of Dunham. I think she is one of the most politically astute voices in America today—able, like few others, to combine her passion for activism with a keen sense of the pulse of her audience.

 

Holy hell. For once, we absolutely agree.

I know some women who are pretty freaking liberal, who consider Dunham an absolute embarassment, both personally and to any causes she espouses. There's a huge difference between being sexually confident and uninhibited and being fucking gross, which Dunham is a huge percentage of the time.

In her own way she's a kind of bizarro analogue of Trump: both blurted out, in interview formats they thought would be positive, that they had engaged in behavior with younger relatives which could be interpreted in some ways as incestuous or abusive, then when confronted with heavily negative reactions, both doubled down, trying to justify, explain away or rationalize the behavior, and in the end, neither really acknowledging there was anything wrong with it.

According to Dunham, it's perfectly ok for an older sister, even into her mid-teens, to regard her younger sister's vagina as a plaything available for whatever hijinks she desires; according to Trump, it's ok for a sixtyish father to repeatedly slobber over how good his daughter looks naked and to ruminate over the idea of "dating" her.

The "Dunham demographic," whatever the hell it may be, is never ever ever ever going to vote for a 74-year-old wild-haired grampa, or ANY Republican under any circumstances whatsoever. HRC will turn off a lot more people getting entangled with Dunham than she will ever "convert."

She'd be best off just quitely tiptoeing away from Dunham.

Since the 2008 presidential campaign, Democrats have purposefully cut white, traditional-values, working-class, predominantly male voters from their coalition in favor of building an urban- and cosmopolitan-centered coalition of minorities, elites and women.

That move left discarded voters with nowhere to go except toward the Republican Party, for which they turned out in large numbers in the 2010 and 2014 midterms and gave the GOP historic wins in state legislatures, governors' offices and Congress.

I wouldn't say "purposefully" as much as "blithely and obliviously."

They need to mercilessly hammer how much GOP teabag policies fuck "white, traditional-values, working-class, predominantly male voters" right in the ass, primarily economically.

As far as the "Lena Dunham demographic," the message should be, "hey, ok, go do your own thing, we're fine with that -- at least we're not going to pass laws stopping you from doing it."

But the "Lena Dunham demographic" is a teeny tiny piece of the overall electorate, and is a dead lock for HRC anyway. No point in her risking even a gram of political capital on their behalf.
