Lean Dean gobbles up another one

    How soon until the layoffs?

Another Southern California paper falls into Lean Dean's hands, this time the Daily Breeze in Torrance is bought by MediaNews and Hearst, but Singleton gets to run the place. Good luck, Daily Breeze folks. Your breathren at many other papers nearby -- Daily News, Pasadena, San Gabriel, Ontario, San Bernardino, Redlands, Long Beach -- can fill you in on what's coming. And it won't be pretty. See San Jose/Contra Costa, etc. to the north and St. Paul to the north and east for more evidence.

The paper has struggled in its market long before the recent what's-next handwringing in our business. The area isn't growing, and the product was better elsewhere.

This isn't exactly the desecration of San Jose. A mediocre paper run by benign neglect gets sold to a bottom-feeder. Oh well. Worse things have happened to better newspapers. But I wonder why Fatso sold it.
