Small daily paper, but it has been publishing since 1911. Last paper is Thursday. CNHI will give the paper's 18 full-time employees no severance, from what I understand.

It's a dirty, stinkin' town yeah - without a newspaper.

Sickening. If they get no severance, it's a truly unconscionable decision.

A friend of mine got his start there out of college.

Absolutely depressing news. Prayers for those who lost their jobs. :(

I've always felt that if anything survives of this business, it will be the smaller dailies and weeklies. Guess that rule doesn't always apply.

Feel for those who lost their jobs, but this was a mercy killing. LLC has been on life support for the past 10 years, at least.

I'm stunned. I knew the paper was in trouble but there were indications from some that the move to cut the paper down to four days was going to make a difference.

Why was the situation in Laurel so problematic? Were they competing with a larger metro daily? Or is this just the beginning of a lot of small paper closures?
