Some of those updates make great gateways. I'd rather see an update done well with the soul of the story kept intact than an awful rendition that amounts to stylish sound and fury, signifying nothing. See: Post-Apocalyptic Antigone and Julius Caesar: The CNN Edition, AKA Go home, Nashville theatre community, that rye bread must have been bad and you made Baby Moses Hadas cry.

Banshees of Inshirin; wow that was great and painful at the same time.

The Menu. Not the torture porn that it's been advertised to be but rather a heavy-handed satire. (Albeit with some funny moments.)

Watched a few on my recent trip. Confess, Fletch was great. Hamm was perfect in the role - so much better than the cartoonish Chevy Chase, but the real reason the movie was superior were the supporting character who were more richly drawn and gave Hamm something to goof on - none better than his first scene with Annie Mumalo. Nope never seemed to figure out what it was about. Some great pieces, but they never really came together for me. Started watching Harriet, which seemed like a TV movie more than a great film.

Wrath of Man an armored car heist/revenge picture from Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie. Decent, if surprisingly convoluted. Great cast: Holt McAllany, Eddie Marsan, Andy Garcia, Josh Hartnett, Scott Eastwood, Jeffrey Donovan of Burn Notice and Laz Alonso.

First movie I saw in theaters post-COVID after NYC theaters finally opened up last year. It was a good one to come back to on the big screen.

The Fablemans is Spielberg's autobiography but not overly sappy or anything. Really liked it. And Glass Onion, the new Knives out--wanted to catch it in theaters before it goes to Netflix only. Lot of fun again, think it's funnier than the original, fantastic cast, some good scenery porn on an island, though overall I preferred the original a tad more. But happy that a Knives Out universe exists and they're going to keep making them.

And I liked The Menu more than britwrit. Fiennes and Anna Taylor-Joy are fantastic. I'm not totally objective though as I have exchanged emails with one of the writers of it. Both writers are Onion alums so the dark humor is definitely there throughout.

There are two vaguely similar, low-key movies both featuring excellent actors working from solidly entertaining scripts that I have seen recently: The Causeway starring Jennifer Lawrence and Ray and Raymond starring Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. If you only have time for one, the latter is probably the better bet as it’s a bit more fully developed. But both will deserve some acting noms this awards season.

We're seeing Glass Onion: Knives Out this afternoon. I LOVE the first one, as does my daughter, who has read every Poirot novel. So she and I are seeing it today because we can't wait for Netflix.

Glad to hear it's entertaining (I've stayed away from reviews before seeing it), and I'm sure we'll like it because these are our kinds of movies. (I'm glad I took up "The Outfit" rec here a while back.) And like you, especially glad there are more coming.

As I said, things like Knives Out feel like they are made specifically for me. But, that said, I had a ton of fun with this one. I agree the mystery isn't as deep (but that's all part of the larger joke), and the humor is terrific. Craig is terrific. Implied references to Elon - and, in particular, the quick slide spoofing Elizabeth Holmes...chef's kiss.

Loved it. Can't to watch it again.

My Johnnies lost in the D3 football playoffs today and I wandered around the craziness of midtown Manhattan for a few hours (office workers might not be back to NYC but tourism definitely is; was kind of awesome being back in that energy again) and then I was like, I need to drown my sorrows and escape. So saw Glass Onion again. Was great the second time seeing it and looking out for the little clues planted along the way (though not the game of Clue...). The theater was PACKED. I got my ticket so late I could only get a second row seat but didn't mind since I'd seen it already. I'm sure there's a hundred reasons Netflix does it this way, but can't understand why they don't give it a longer run in theaters, a month even. It's doing great in like 600 theaters even.
