Agreed. From what I hear, the Dems would ordinarily have no chance to win Craig's seat in Idaho. All of a sudden the Repubs have another serious problem on their hands.

What Sportschick said. Though I think Utah is actually not quite as red as Idaho in many ways or a least it didn't used to be. Once upon a time, all AP copy referred to Idaho as "the nation's most-Republican state."

For those really interested in the possibility of Idaho electing a Democrat to any office anytime soon, do some research on freshman congressmen Bill Sali and the state's Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna. While the rest of the nation turned blue last year, Idaho went deeper into the red as if to call the rest of the country a bunch of commie bitches.

I was basing my reddest state stuff on presidential approval polling. Sali is one scary dude though. Yowza!

I've heard about Sali from some friends in Boise...by all accounts he's a right wing nut (he raised a stink after a Hindu or representative from some non-Christian group said a prayer before the start of Congress one day) and a prick (a fellow Republican in the Idaho Legislature threatened to toss him out of a window)

Statewide, Utah's pretty reliably red. But I learned a month or two ago that Salt Lake City itself is actually remarkably blue. Very gay-friendly, largely Democratic and a mayor who makes Cindy Sheehan look like a Rush Limbaugh clone. (Well, OK, maybe not that liberal, but he is pretty liberal.)
