As mentioned above, I canceled last week. When I canceled, Faith (Fatima) said my balance was $9.33. I said OK.
Yesterday, I get the bill in the mail for $9.33.
Today, phone rings, guy asked for me and says he is from the L.A. Times. I immediately figure he's following up on my cancellation, he's going to ask why I canceled, and I'm prepared to listen to his spiel to re-up.
Instead, he says, "You owe us $9.33. When are you gonna pay that?"
I (now a bit stunned) say, "Uh, yeah, I just got the bill in the mail yesterday. I'll probably pay it tomorrow or the next day."
He says, "OK, I just want to make sure you pay us what you owe us."
I (now a bit pissed) say, "Are hassling me over this? I get a bill yesterday and you're hassling me for $9.33 one day later?"
He said, "Just don't forget to pay us."
I say, "I'm sure I won't .... forget .... asshole."

Heck, the L.A. Daily News had a 12-page section today with a color doubletruck ad and two other half-page color ads. Maybe the advertising dollars are headed to the Valley.

 

I wrote the check for $9.33 today and will mail it tomorrow. I looked at the bill and the due date is Aug. 9.
That means LAT, which is laying off more than 100 journalists, some of whom are good friends of mine, is paying someone to call and hassle people over a $9.33 bill on July 31 that is not due until Aug. 9.

 

That call almost certainly was coming from "Eric" in India.
