CERA is silly. Catcher A catches better pitchers than Catcher B, who is going to have the better CERA?

No, or at least it shouldn't be that way. The Cy Young Award goes to the best pitcher, not the most valuable pitcher.

I wouldn't want to use it to compare across teams for the reason you state. But it would be interesting to investigate if you controlled for catchers that share a pitching staff.

The definitive study on the subject was done by Baseball Reference in 1999. That's a little dated now, so it might be time for an update:

Why is Sabathia a winner? Because he wins.

Why does Sabathia win? Because he is a winner.

Tautologies. Winning playground arguments since 1900.

Yankees offense has nothing to do with it. I'm sure his record would be the same if he pitched for the Mariners.

Reading this board over the years makes me realize how useless these awards are.

Um, yeah. In nine of Hernandez's 12 losses, he's gotten one or no runs support from his teammates. Tough to win games when your team doesn't score runs. and Sabathia gets the best run support in the AL, at nearly seven runs per game.

Winners are able to induce their teams to score runs. That's why they win.
