I wonder who the vet was, if that's true that someone approached Milledge and told him to grow up. I don't know a lot about the other personalities in that clubhouse, but Glavine always had that Whitey Ford-esque aura in Atlanta. Chairman of the Board, etc., etc. I can see where he and Da Mill would clash. Pure speculation on part ....

FWIW, the rumor I've heard in a couple of places is that it was Billy Wagner.

Yeah, I think that was broadway joe's point, beer. He was pointing out that those two were youngsters hyped like crazy who actually have panned out.

Yes, the Mets overhype their prospects. But most clubs do the same. Witness Yankees stories about Phil Hughes and Eric Duncan. It's what teams do.

And the Milledge situation is hardly unique. When Gregg Jefferies was getting the treatment with the Mets, a veteran (Randy Myers) ripped the kid up and down, and when Davey Johnson put Jefferies into a lineup one day despite a deep slump, someone wrote on the lineup card, "Do we want to win?"

My point is that this happens. The good ones (Reyes, Wright) overcome it.

Worse than Milledge's attitude -- he flat can't field.
