Here's how messed up my state is.
20-30 years ago death penalty goes back on the books
Number of people on death row waiting to be executed: 12-15 (maybe more)
Number of executions carried out in those 20-30 years: ZERO
But now the governor and state legislators are working to repeal the death penalty. Newspaper editorials are coming out supporting that idea.
Why bother repealing a form of criminal punishment that's never been used?
If they wrongfully executed someone or if a high percentage of those executed were minorities and they were afraid the law was being applied unequally or something, then yes, repeal it. But if its never been applied, why bother? Just let the criminals continue to rot on death row instead of putting them back in with the general population.

The Swedes are even more prohibitive. They do have it right. We fucking spend over $25,000 a year to house an inmate in this country. In Europe, you are removed from society and its privileges. No weightlifting, no TVs, no library. You are not meant to live comfortably. It is not meant to be.

I can see Lane Kiffin in November...the Silver and Black are down 17-3 to the hated Chiefs...and he tells this story. It's not the Gipper speech, but its the closest the Raiders will get.
