You're insane, Manky. For starters, he has never, not in his entire career, hit 25 HRs in a season. Suddenly not playing the field is going to make his bat quicker than it's ever been?

He's Captain Jetes, of course he can.

You're insane, or something. There's no way Jeter will play five more years. He'll be lucky to get two more years.

25 homers? The most he's ever hit in a season is 24, and that was way back in 1999. WTF are you smoking, dude?

And quit calling him "Jetes." Makes you sound like even more of a moron.

Good points by all. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

I figure if we are going to have over-the-top fanbois on here, might as well give some balance.... ;D

I concur. For all those people who do not worship at the throne of Jeter, I bring out this old classic: 100 reasons to hate Derek Jeter. http://www.torontobaseballguys.com/jeter.html.

    36. Grounds into DP - double figures in every season of his career. They are all "clutch" double plays, naturally.

    47. His contract - The Yankees will be pay $21 million for a 36-year-old Jeter in 2010. That kind of deal will have even the Yankees hollering "Albatross!" louder than John Cleese at the Hollywood Bowl.

    86. Intangibles - Jeter fans and most announcers will tell you that it's his intangibles that separate Jeter from everyone else. Of course, you can't measure intangibles - that's why they're intangibles - and so you can credit Jeter with anything without being able to prove or disprove it. Fall of Communism? Jeter. Human Genome Project? also Jeter. iPod? That's right...

His home run today was his third of the season. First at Yankee Stadium since LAST July.
Forget 4,000 hits. If he becomes a full-time DH he might make a run at Bonds.

    Re: Jeter 3000

The debate over Jeter's place in history has ramped up for two reasons. First, that same skew toward what's fresh in our minds puts him smack in the debate that always surrounds a waning superstar. He turned 37 on June 26, one of 20 days he spent on the disabled list with a right calf strain that delayed his march to 3,000.

Statistical analysts have long debated Jeter's value, especially on defense, where stats aren't as objective as offensive numbers.

Stats guru Bill James wrote at the height of Jeter's career in 2005, "He is not a Gold Glove-quality shortstop. He isn't an average defensive shortstop. Giving him every possible break on the unknowns, he is still going to emerge as a below-average defensive shortstop."

"Something like that is a disgrace," Yankees special assistant and former shortstop Gene Michael said after a 2008 study proclaimed Jeter the worst defensive shortstop in the majors. "It made me ill when I read that article. … That's a bunch of baloney. It's disgraceful."

He has never won a batting title or been an MVP or led the league in anything other than runs in 1998 and hits in 1999. Jeter was called the most overrated player in baseball in a 2008 Sports Illustrated survey. He finished third this year — behind teammates Alex Rodriguez and Joba Chamberlain. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/al/yankees/2011-07-06-derek-jeter-new-york-history_n.htm
