Not that it brings me any satisfaction to assert this, but I do think that as a country, we're much more comfortable being sexist than we are being racist. Don't know how much this applies to the presidential race, as hopefully most people aren't people all worked up about the race and/or gender of the candidates. But sexism is a lot more socially acceptable than racism. Don't really see how this is even debatable.

I think you only need to look as far as the signature on the post above you to start making a case for it.

I've been thinking about why America isn't ready to elect a non-white candidate and I still can't find the answer except to say that Bush somehow was re-elected in 2004. There is a lot of America out there that I don't see or know about or really comprehend.

Like, sitting at a traffic light this evening and on a truck in front of me there were two bumper stickers: "Got Deer" and "Bambi, the other red meat". I don't have anything against people hunting deer, but I certainly don't "know" that person who would put those bumper stickers on his automobile. The same as I don't "know" or really understand those who chose to reelect Bush. It's confusing. And I take that confusion and stir it with the history of racism we have in this country and voted that "no", we aren't ready for a mixed-race president.

As far as sexism goes, I don't think that speaking in crass or crude terms about heterosexual sex is necessarily indicitaive of sexism. Just sayin'. Being crass on occasion about sex and hating women are two different things, even if there's potential for overlap.

As a postscript, some of the worst sexists I've ever known weren't boorish, garden-variety misogynists, but crafty, liberal-arts-educated, closet sexists who knew better than to use coarse language in describing women or sex, but who still managed to treat all the women they knew like a piece of dogshit that had got stuck to their shoe.

Quit reading the New York Times, listening to NPR and watching MSNBC. That will help.

I agree, you're mostly right. Though I've noticed these boards do contain a fair amount of misogynistic/sexist poking and prodding, and individuals are rarely called on it. Maybe it's entirely good-natured and I'm too new to see it is mostly inside jokes among friends.

Still bothers me a bit to see a signature that graphic, and I like porn as much as the next guy.
