"-ing" in a headline

    We had that rule under our former editor. Too often, -ing headlines got used as a crutch. They're easy. And usually they can be rewritten into something better.

    We let them slide a bit more often now, but if I see one when I'm editing I'll usually ask for something different.

    I believe the proper term is a gerundive. Not a gerund (i.e. "Fucking is fun") in which the verb is used as a noun, but the verb is used to carry out a thought in a standalone phrase (i.e. "Fucking a goat.")
