Okay, so I have to shoot a judo competitor for a feature.

I'm meeting him at the judo club. He'll have his traditonal judo garb.

Any ideas for photos, considering this won't be a compeition?

Make sure someone else is there that he can throw around for the photos. That's what makes it judo. And will make good pictures.

Yeah, I have to admit, I'm no martial arts expert. So, I have no idea which is kicking, which is punching, which is throwing.

In judo they do a lot more of wrestling type moves and throw people around. It will make good photos. The guy probably does demonstrations. Ask him to do one with someone and shoot it.

You might ask him to run through it once so you see what is going on and can be ready to shoot the best stuff the second time around.

You want him to perform his "Kata." He will go through multiple poses, strikes, falls and kicks.
Should give you plenty of material for a photograph.
