I owe Tony K and Rocket Ismail an apology

Many times this year, I have thought to myself that Mr. Tony is the worst sports commentator in the business. However, until tonight, I had never had the pleasure of witnessing Rocket Ismail in action.

Ladies and gentlemen, Rocket sucks ass.

I swear to you that I just listened to this paid analysts, on national TV, give his thoughts on Cal's chances in a tough Holiday Bowl matchup with Texas.

I know what you're thinking -- he meant Texas A&M and just said Texas by mistake.

Oh no. He named Texas players and talked about the individual matchups.

    EDIT: Sorry about that, Rocket.

I thought I heard him say Texas, but I just assumed it was a mistake. He really named players and talked about individual matchups? Maybe he thought this was two years ago.

Was this live? Did anybody correct him or did they just let him make a fool of himself?

It was live. I thought I heard him say Texas, but I was wrapping gifts and barely paying attention. Doug Flutie went before him and talked about the Boise State / Oklahoma game. Flutie didn't correct him.

Now for the more relevant question... It's 30-0 in the third quarter of something that I think is the San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl (or something like that). I have no money riding on the game and the two teams playing mean nothing to me. Why am I watching this?

It was very live and there was a weird little pause by the guy sitting next to Rocket, who was supposed to give his most anticipated bowl game. It sort of seemed like he was trying to decide whether or not to correct him.

Either that or he was in absolute shock over what he had just heard. Because if he was like me, he was thinking Rocket had just screwed up and said Texas at first, but had that thought completely shot to hell when he started naming off Texas players and talking about the matchups.

How does that happen? I mean, from the 30 seconds I listened to Rocket, I surmised rather quickly that he's not the greatest of on-TV personalities. No one at ESPN is going over what the hell this guy is gonna say?

Live TV can not at all still be that unscripted now. Good golly.

I find myself watching the postgame show with great interest hoping Ismail will tell us that one-loss Michigan State should be playing for the national title.

Nope. He'll tell you that Florida International deserved that spot against Ohio University
