Obits were never that big of a problem for me. I always felt like I was doing a service there. It's obviously a dark day in the survivors' lives, but people in that situation usually want to talk to someone about their loved one, and there's almost always one or two people in the family who take charge of things and are happy to talk to you. If you have the right approach and catch them after the initial shock wears off, those can be the best, easiest and, I hate to say it, most enjoyable stories to write.

    ... am not wearing pants.

Speaking of people making up quotes, I was in charge of media ops at a fairly prominent youth championship event years ago and had a small team of "quotes" people. Midway through the event, I looked down the stands and saw one of our folks sitting and writing at breakneck pace. Thought, "Hmm, ol' Scooter must have really caught a few live ones." I watched him some more and saw him get up and wander around, then return to the seats and start writing again. At that point, I figured he either had the best memory ever, or was just making shit up. When he came up to turn in his stuff.... yeah, it was obviously the latter. He had words in there that no kid could possibly have used.

Back when I was just starting out as a writer one of our big high schools had a new coach whose son died while lifting weights during summer workouts. I had to write a combined news story/obit, which meant I was supposed to call the coach's home. Never have I been more relieved to be told "They're not taking any calls."

I admit that I love performing but feel little pull to attend the theatre. Much like porn I'd rather be doing than watching.

KYSW, you will always have your friends here at sj.com, and they can be a pretty tight supportive group despite the differences, bitching, trolling, etc.

I'll never forget my first year participating in Secret Santa and drawing your name.

Speaking of which, yo, Santa. About time for you to wake up!

... still write and send snail-mail letters. Part of it just to be a contrary, luddite type. The other part: I like starting a letter and seeing where my thoughts end up by the end of it. Even without any response or feedback (and I do get some), it's an enjoyable exercise.

Just don't ask about the neatness or legibility of my cursive/print hybrid ... :)

...have no idea what y'all are talking about when you're talking about overs, unders, pushes, etc. on the college football board. It's something to do with betting on the games, but I haven't a clue.

    Those cookies were delicious, too.

I know this, I just can't shake the feeling -- especially when I see a large chunk of my friends getting married and starting families and shit.
