HS makes student with Down syndrome and autism remove varsity letter

    Exactly. It's not like this kid all of a sudden won't have Down Syndrome when he becomes 18.

    To slightly rearrange a tired cliche ("Be the change you want to see"), why should we choose to exclude or treat those with disabilities in a shitty way just because society tends to do the same? The suggestion that I shouldn't do something to make this kid feel more included, or a part of something, because other jerks will treat him that way, is backwards.

    This isn't a case of coddling a spoiled child. This is a boy that can't process the politics of social/athletic hierarchies the way that we can. We do him no favors by making him succumb to it, anyway. We only provide fodder for those who fear people take sports and arbitrary distinctions too seriously at the expense of, you know, empathy or reasonable sympathy.
