Hosting golf majors question

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by markvid, Jun 14, 2007.

  1. Don't know if this was already addressed, but here are the bodies that host the majors:

Masters - Augusta National Golf Club
    U.S. Open - USGA
British Open - Royal & Ancient Golf Club
PGA - PGA of America (different than PGA Tour).

That's the LPGA Titleholders, Mr. Gee.

Please cite the sources of the PGA Tour "relentelessly pimping" The Players Championship. In almost every interview on the subject since he took over in 1995, Tim Finchem, the commish, said he's only trying to put on the best tournament possible, and let the public and the media decide.

I believe the PGA Tour co-hosts all the majors.

C'mon, Hondo. You don't think the PGA Tour eats up the network hype over the Players and the countless stories every year about whether it's the fifth major? Finchem can give that company line all day about letting public/media decide, but he dearly wants it to be mentioned in the same breath as the majors. The Tour puts it on the same level as the majors in terms of playing exemptions and FedEx Cup points. Not that the winner isn't every bit as worthy, given the strength of field, but it's not a major.

Sure, he wants it to be a major. But he knows he can't force it on anyone. But as far as awarding exemptions, FedEx Cup points, etc, for the Players, well, can't his organization run their league as they see fit? If he wanted to give more points for winning The Players as for majors, it would be within his rights, since The Players is the biggest event the Tour runs. He's at least got a say in that.

And as far as hype, isn't the PGA Tour allowed to promote its product? The NFL, MLB and NBA certainly do.

The Players will never be a major for one simple reason: The venue. Sawgrass is the Tate Modern of golf.

Of course they're allowed. I've just always thought it eats up the PGA Tour brass that the four biggest dates on the calendar aren't under their control. That's all.

It hosted the Senior PGA Championship, but was it considered a major then?

It might eat them up, but they know they can't do anything but try to make the Players as good as they can, and hope Tiger annoints it one day, the same way Jack and Arnie annointed the current four majors. But since Jack won the Players three times and Tiger once, he won't do anything that adds a net two titles to Jack's total.

But to show you how ludicrous the whole argument is, Bobby Jones keeps getting credit for having won the Grand Slam in 1930. His victories were the U.S. Open, British Open, U.S. Amateur and British Amateur.

So how come Richie Ramsey (2006 U.S. Amateur champion) isn't getting credit for having won a major? Or why isn't Tiger getting credit for 15 majors (three U.S. Amateur victories)?

The rule is you can count your U.S. Amateur as a major if you've won a pro major. Otherwise, nope.

Not so. Tiger has 12 professional majors, and that's all they give. The record he's chasing is Jack's 18 -- all professional majors. Jack one two U.S. Ams. So why isn't Tiger getting 15, and chasing 20?

    He's not. That's what I'm talking about.

And actually, there is no rule to this stuff. Right now, the issue of majors is whatever Doug Ferguson says it is.
