Are you essential to your audience? That’s what The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi is looking for in its next high schools and recruiting editor.

You’ll have the freedom to report on not just what is going on in the Jackson metro area, but throughout the state of Mississippi. This job is about finding the best stories, and we’ll play to your strengths on how to tell them. You’ll need to be a reporter in order to do that part of the job well, but also cover recruiting in one of the country’s most fertile areas per capita.

You’ll also need to be organized: this position is a supervisory one, coordinating with a team of part-time employees and freelancers to supplement coverage throughout the state. The editor will also help to lead the newsroom effort to coordinate the annual Mississippi Sports Awards banquet and be a major part of the ceremony. Radio/podcasting and video experience are strongly preferred.

It’s a demanding position, but also a rewarding one. Previous editors now work for the San Jose Mercury News, New Orleans Advocate and Knoxville News-Sentinel, and this opening is being created because the current editor is taking over one of our SEC beats.

We are a drug free, EEO employer committed to a diverse workforce. We will consider all qualified candidates regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, family responsibilities, disability, education, political affiliation or veteran status. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug test and acceptable motor vehicle record.

Email sports editor Hugh Kellenberger at hkellenber@jackson.gannett.com with a resume and portfolio, including links to multimedia work and social media accounts. No phone calls.

Bumped to top, the announcement was online an hour or so ago...

Annie Constabile got this job. Bio said she's done high school sports coverage for Comcast in the Chicago area, among other things. Congratulations!
