Saying negative things about Israel does not make one an anti-Semite.

But you can't have an honest conversation about Israel without it getting all twisted up, or, for that matter, ill-advised comments about Israel in the flip camera age.

I second that, 21. Many Presidents enjoyed, and at times detest, her questions and thoughts. It's disappointing when, of all people, she spoke at the cuff and didn't stop to think about it before speaking.

Jay, when it comes to Israel, race, sex, and politics, there is no way in hell we'll never have an honest conversation about any of those topics. We're afraid to verbally hurting people, afraid to be attacked by someone we may offend, and sadly we'll never tell the truth or what we really feel.

We'll rather lie and say everything's alright.

Here's the transcript. Nothing twisted up, it's what she said.

An honest conversation does not seem to be something like this:

Specifically, she was asked, “Any comments on Israel?”

“Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine,” she responded.

The interviewer then asked “Any better comments on Israel?” To which Thomas said, “Remember, these people are occupied and it’s their land. It’s not German’s. It’s not Poland’s.”

Thomas was then asked where the Jews in Israel should go and what they should do? Thomas responded, “They should go home” which the White House reporter identified as “Poland, Germany . . . and America and everywhere else.”

Maybe by folks like you. Most real people won't care. When all is said and done, she'll be remembered more for her trailblazing career than for one bad moment provoked by a wingnut rabbi playing "gotcha" journalism.

    She's a modern-day Moses.

Let my people go ... to Poland and Germany and America and everywhere else!

How is that any different from Al Campanis's trail blazing career?

The Germany-Poland part was clearly wrong. But questioning how good of a thing Israel is is perfectly fine

Religion is to blame, not Helen.

It's one thing to criticize Israeli politics; you'll find plenty of Jews doing the same. But when you tell the Jews to go back to Poland and Germany--where, you know, we lost a few relatives over the years--that is quite another deal.

As for the Campanis/JimmytheGreek comparisions: To me, those were doddering sports guys who just didn't know any better, they spoke the language of the world they lived in. They just didn't get it.

Helen Thomas was a doddering journalist who absolutely knew better; her entire career was based on chronicling and interpreting the language of the world she lives in.

Again, here is the transcript. Where is the 'gotcha' journalism here?
