Oh, I'm sure she's fine. Brad, the SE, said it was probably stronger than a 3.0 or so, maybe a 4...but I'm sure she's fine. It's her 4-year-old son I'm more concerned about, just mentally. He'll be fine too.

Nowhere near a strong enough quake for a tsunami, thank goodness.

But it could get rough over there for the next few days. FEMA is already on the case and Brownie is safely ensconced in a sushi bar in Lihue.

Pretty interesting stuff here, if you're into weather like some of us on here are.

Considering the live volcanos on the big island, I'm surprised it doesn't have more frequent major tremors.

Hawaii Ironman is Saturday in Kona. Ironman.com reports no plans to alter anything, though I'd be leery of swimming in the ocean immediately after an earthquake.

Isn't it the other way around? Don't the tremors cause shifts that cause the volcanic activity or am I wrong?

    Update: My friend called.

They'd gone to the beach, since the electricity was out.

    *sigh*

I wonder how an earthquake affects the water quality? What kind of things get stirred up? Interesting thought...
