Married for 16. No love on Valentine's Day for 11 years now. At least I have no expectations for the day anymore.

But I always shell out for flowers for her at the office.

Also explain why I don't mind spending Valentine's Day night watching and talking to teenage boys.

    Whoops. That doesn't sound right.

I mean, er, I am covering a basketball game. :)

A few years ago, there was an "Office" episode where Pam told Roy not to get him anything. Then, the rest of the episode, we were shown Pam getting madder and madder as other women at the office received gifts. We were supposed to sympathize with her because Roy was supposed to realize that she actually did want something.

At that moment in time, I turned to my girlfriend/fiancee, now wife, and said, "Don't you ever pull that on me."

It's wonderful. Now when she says, "Don't get me anything for Valentine's Day," there's no pressure to crack the code.

We're still waging war over birthdays. I'd like to cut them out.

No. If she gives you that on VD, you give her what she wants on birthdays.

As we knew in advance we'd be in different locations today, we had a great steak dinner last Thursday and then went to a dessert tasting event.

She left me a card when she left Monday morning to go out of town. There will be a card on her bed tonight when she gets home.

We don't do the flowers thing much any more, as the cats get into them if she brings them home. I usually send flowers to her office once a year unexpectedly, as that seems to pack more impact.

    Birthdays are stupid.

Unfortunately, if SOs don't feel that way, you have to play the game.

I read this as "If she gives you VD, you give her what she wants on birthdays" and was momentarily mystified at the logic of that. :D
